California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC)

California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) is one of the largest private, non-profit, academic medical centers in Northern California. The Medical Center is a combination of four of San Francisco's oldest medical institutions: Pacific Presbyterian Hospital, Children's Hospital of San Francisco and Davies Medical Center; now known as the Pacific Campus, the California Campus, Davies Campus, and St. Luke's Campus. St. Luke's, the most recent addition to California Pacific Medical Center, officially merged with CPMC in January 2007, affiliate of Sutter Health.

CPMC was formed in 1991 by the merger of Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center and Children's Hospital of San Francisco. Ralph K. Davies Medical Center became the third campus of CPMC in 1998; and on January 1, 2007, St. Luke's Hospital became CPMC's fourth campus.

Exceptional patient care is integrated with medical and nursing education, as well as research. In addition to primary and acute care, the Medical Center is recognized as a regional referral center providing communities throughout northern California with access to advanced medical care.

CPMC hosts the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute, which conducts basic science and clinical studies into a range of topics. The research institute is directed by Warren S. Browner, M.D., M.P.H.

Hospital, Clinic

Each of the four campuses contain a hospital and an emergency department, and provide inpatient and outpatient services. In addition to the hospital campuses, CPMC owns and/or operates multiple outpatient clinics, a research facility and several other properties more fully described in the most recent IMP document.

CPMC is one of three hospitals that operate hospital facilities at more than one location within San Francisco (the other two are Kaiser and UCSF). St. Francis Memorial and St. Mary's Medical Center operate as independent facilities, although both are a part of the Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) system.

Three of CPMC's four acute-care hospitals must be rebuilt or de-licensed in order to comply with state law, including the hospitals at California, Pacific, and St. Luke's Campus'. The Davies Campus was retrofitted in 2008, enabling this campus to accommodate acute-care hospital services until 2030.

Approximately 60 principal investigators, both laboratory and clinical researchers work within the Research Institute and the Medical Center. Some of these scientists are engaged in clinical research and clinical trials and others are engaged in research that will help us understand the function of certain human cells, genes, proteins and other fundamental structures within our bodies.
